Alice was a renowned sorceress and healer in the days before the Great Purge. She was also Gaius' close friend and ex-fiancée.
Biography
Early Life
Gaius and Alice were engaged prior to the Great Purge.
Before the Great Purge, Alice worked as a sorceress in the city of Camelot. She dabbled in many different kinds of magic, including dark magic, but was known throughout the lands as a particularly skilled healer.
Alice met Gaius soon after he was appointed Court Physician. They became friends and then lovers, and were eventually engaged to be married. However, their romance came to an end when Uther instituted the Great Purge. Alice chose to flee Camelot while Gaius remained behind.
At the start of the Great Purge, Uther drew up a list of everyone suspected of using magic and one by one had them hunted down and executed. Alice's name was on the list, but Gaius protected her by striking it off. His actions bought her just enough time to escape (Love in the Time of Dragons).
Return to Camelot
Twenty years later, Alice came into possession of the Manticore's box. She summoned the creature hoping to use its magic for good, but it was too strong for her and took control of her mind. Under its thrall, Alice returned to Camelot and set up shop in the city's Lower Town, where she soon began to make a name for herself as a miraculous healer.
Alice came to Uther's attention when she cured Evoric, the innkeeper, of what Gaius had previously diagnosed as a fatal illness. Gaius was ordered to investigate and quickly recognised Alice's work. He covered for her with Uther by claiming that Evoric had been healed by an herbal remedy and then visited Alice later that night.
Overjoyed to see each other, Gaius and Alice quickly rekindled their romance and began working together professionally. Gaius even invited Alice to move in with him and Merlin. However, their reunion was also part of the Manticore's plan to kill Uther. It forced Alice to harvest its venom and then use it to poison Uther's medicine.
Unbeknownst to Alice, Merlin had seen her collecting the Manticore's venom. When Uther was found to have been poisoned, Merlin realised what she'd done and told Arthur. Alice was arrested and taken to the dungeons, where Merlin watched Arthur interrogate her. When he realised that she was being controlled by the Manticore, he told Gaius and together they conspired to kill the creature, freeing Alice and saving Uther's life.
Though Uther fully recovered from the Manticore's venom, he still sentenced Alice to death for her use of magic. Gaius visited Alice in the dungeons and broke the news to her, and they talked and reaffirmed their love. He returned later that night and helped Alice escape, though he chose not to go with her because he felt it was more important that he stay and look after Merlin (Love in the Time of Dragons).
Personality
Alice was kown to be kind, compassionate, and fiercely loyal. She never forgot her ex-fiancé Gaius and kept him in her thoughts every day after they were forced to part ways, and was very understanding when she believed Merlin to be jealous of the attention Gaius was giving her. She was also very intelligent and confident in her abilities, and was especially passionate about science, healing, and magic.
However, Alice's pride and love of learning sometimes caused her to take unwise risks to satisfy her curiosity. She was said to have experimented with dark magic in her youth, and fell prey to the Manticore when she summoned it to see if she could use its magic for good (Love in the Time of Dragons).
