Kings were male monarchs who ruled over kingdoms. Most kings came into their power through inheritance; as the eldest male surviving child, they succeeded their father and ascended the throne upon his death. However, it was also possible to become one through conquest; by seizing power from a ruling monarch.
As the highest power in the land, a king held despotic authority over state affairs and oversaw the running of their kingdom with the help of their advisors. Their crown and rich dress symbolized their position.
The female equivalent or consort of a king was a Queen.
